History
5 year old M with unsteady gait, clumsiness, and slurred speech
Major Findings
- Diffuse sulcal effacement and crowding of the basal cisterns are suggestive of cerebral edema
Teaching Points
Only two shades of gray are seen in the brain parenchyma (the darkest shade of gray for CSF is not seen in the sulci).
Lack of sulci is suggestive of mass effect from cerebral edema but can also be seen with hydrocephalus or meningitis.
