Teaching Points

Just as in an adult, follow your four cervical spinal contour lines:
  1. Anterior vertebral line
  2. Posterior vertebral line
  3. Spinolaminar line
  4. Posterior spinous line
Disruption of any of these lines or interspinous widening is concerning for underlying ligamentous injury and an MRI should be recommended.

Also remember to look for prevertebral soft tissue swelling as a sign of hematoma after trauma (this patient has normal soft tissues).
